Privacy Policy

Kilowhiz helps Texans find the electricity plan that actually costs the least on their real usage. Doing that requires your trust with sensitive information — your address, your meter data, your electricity contracts. This policy explains, in plain language, exactly what we collect, why, and what we will never do with it.

The short version: we collect only what the analysis needs, we use it only to run your analysis, we never sell it, and you can revoke our access to your meter data or delete everything at any time.

What we collect

Information you give us: your email address, your service address, documents you upload or email to us (such as your electricity bill and your contract renewal or expiration notice), and answers you give in the app (for example, whether your heating is gas or electric).

Meter data, only with your authorization: with your express consent (a checkbox you tick in the app, which we record), we ask Smart Meter Texas (“SMT”), the data portal jointly owned by Texas's regulated utilities, for access to your electricity consumption, meter, and premise information. SMT then emails you directly (from info@communications.smartmetertexas.com) and nothing happens until you click CONFIRM in that email. You do not need an SMT account to do this. The request expires on its own after five weekdays if you do nothing, and you can choose “Do Not Confirm” at no cost or penalty: declining costs nothing — no fee and no contract depends on it. The authorization lasts 12 months (the maximum SMT allows for residential customers) unless you renew it. SMT emails you a renewal reminder 30 days and again 15 days before it expires; renewing is your choice. What we receive is your electricity usage history (15-minute, daily, and monthly readings, up to 24 months back) and the meter and premise attributes SMT holds, such as the meter number and utility territory.

Information we derive: your ESI ID (the utility identifier for your address), your utility territory, and the analysis we compute from your usage — load profiles, plan cost comparisons, and recommendations. We keep your session transcripts so you can review your past analyses.

Ordinary technical data: IP address and basic logs needed to operate and secure the service.

What we never collect

We never ask for, store, log, or auto-fill your Social Security number, date of birth, or payment card details. When you enroll in an electricity plan, you enter those only on the electricity provider's own website, and the final signup is always completed by you, not by us.

How we use your information

To analyze your usage and rank electricity plans by what they would actually cost you;
To explain those recommendations and give you usage insights;
To remind you about contract-expiration and switch-timing windows you've asked us to track;
To operate, secure, and improve the service.

That's the whole list. We do not sell your personal data, we do not share it with electricity providers or advertisers, and we do not use it for targeted advertising. As a registered electricity broker, Kilowhiz is also bound by 16 TAC §25.486(j): information that identifies you or your electricity account is never released or sold without your written authorization. Our broker disclosures have the rest of what that registration requires us to tell you.

AI processing

Kilowhiz uses an AI service provider (Anthropic) to read the documents you upload and to power the analysis conversation. This processing happens under confidentiality terms, and your data is not used to train their models.

Who we share data with

Only service providers that make Kilowhiz run — website hosting (Vercel), data storage (Supabase), and AI processing (Anthropic) — each bound to use your data solely to provide their service to us. Beyond that, we disclose personal data only if the law requires it.

Your meter data is yours

You can end our access to your Smart Meter Texas data at any time, in either of the two ways SMT provides: (1) tell us — email support@kilowhiz.com or use the disconnect option in your account — and we terminate the data-sharing agreement with SMT immediately; or (2) create an account at smartmetertexas.com and end the authorization there yourself. SMT's rules permit a third party to keep retrieving data from the authorized period for up to 45 days after an authorization ends. We do not use that window: the moment your authorization ends or is revoked, we stop retrieving any data from SMT. Data we already hold stays in your account under the retention rules below until you delete it.

A note SMT asks you to understand: Kilowhiz is an independent service. It is registered with the Public Utility Commission of Texas as an electricity broker (No. BR260211), but neither SMT nor the Commission reviews this policy; Kilowhiz is the party responsible for it and for how your data is handled once you authorize access. Any question or disagreement about how we use your information is between you and us — contact us at the address below and we will resolve it directly.

Retention and deletion

We keep your information while your account is active so your history and renewal reminders work. Delete your account from the Account tab and we purge your documents, usage data, and session history, keeping only what the law requires us to retain; a live Smart Meter Texas connection is revoked first and the account is removed once that revocation is confirmed.

Security

Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and access is limited to what the service needs to function.

Your rights

Under the Texas Data Privacy and Security Act you may request access to, correction of, deletion of, or a portable copy of your personal data, and you may opt out of its sale or use in targeted advertising (we do neither). Email support@kilowhiz.com and we'll respond within the timelines the law sets.

Children

Kilowhiz is for adults entering electricity contracts and is not directed to anyone under 18.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top and, for meaningful changes, notify you by email before they take effect.
