Privacy policy

Kilowhiz helps Texans find the electricity plan that costs the least on their own meter readings. Doing that requires your trust with sensitive information — your address, your meter readings, your bills and plan documents. This policy explains what we collect and how we use it.
What we collect
Information you give us: your email address, your service address, documents you upload or forward to us (such as your electricity bill, your plan's EFL, and your renewal offer or contract-expiration notice), the questions you type in chat, and answers you give us on Kilowhiz (for example, whether your heating is gas or electric). A bill shows more than its charges: your name, service address, account number, meter number, ESI ID, provider and plan are on it, and we store the document and the facts we read from it.
Email, if you use it: you can forward documents to a private Kilowhiz address made for your account, and we keep what you forward. If you connect your mailbox, we search it for bills and plan documents and keep the ones you import. You can disconnect it at any time.
Meter readings and meter details, with your consent: with your consent, which we record, we ask Smart Meter Texas (“SMT”) for your usage history and meter details. SMT emails you to confirm.
Information we derive: your ESI ID (the utility identifier for your address), your utility, and the assessment we compute from your meter readings, the monthly usage printed on your bills, or your modeled profile: load profiles, plan cost comparisons, and recommendations. We keep your session transcripts so you can review your past assessments.
Information from public and licensed records: we find your meter from your address in the state's public premise records, and we read details about your home (such as its size, age and heating type) from your county appraisal district's public records or, where those are not available, from a licensed property-data provider.
How the site is used: we use analytics and session-recording tools to see how the site is used and fix problems. They record pages, clicks and errors, and may keep your email address with your account. We also keep your answers to our surveys.
Ordinary technical data and cookies: IP address and basic logs needed to operate and secure the service. We use cookies to keep you signed in, for analytics and for advertising.
What we don't ask for
Kilowhiz doesn't ask for your Social Security number, date of birth or card number. When you enroll in an electricity plan, you give those to the provider on its own website and complete the signup yourself.
How we use your information
- To analyze your usage and rank electricity plans by what they would cost you;
- To explain those recommendations and give you usage insights;
- To remind you about contract-expiration dates and fee-free windows you've asked us to track;
- To operate, secure, and improve the service.
- To measure our ads and choose who sees them, through the advertising pixels described below.
A provider whose sign-up link you open from Kilowhiz may learn you came from us.
AI processing
An AI service provider reads the documents you upload and runs the chat.
Advertising
We advertise on social media. Our pages use pixels, cookies and similar technologies from third parties, including Meta, to collect or receive information from our site and elsewhere on the internet, such as which of our pages your browser opened and steps taken there. Advertising platforms use that information to measure our ads and to choose who sees them, including people who have visited Kilowhiz.
To opt out, turn on Global Privacy Control in your browser, block advertising cookies or scripts in your browser's settings, or change your ad preferences in your Facebook or Instagram account.
Who we share data with
We share information with the kinds of service providers that make Kilowhiz run:
- hosting, database and file storage;
- domain and email routing;
- email delivery;
- AI processing;
- analytics;
- payments;
- advertising;
- property records and address lookup;
- your email provider, if you connect your mailbox.
Smart Meter Texas receives what it needs to send you its Confirm email when you ask us to connect your meter: your ESI ID, your meter number, your current provider and your email address. We may also disclose information when the law requires it, to protect Kilowhiz or others, or if the business is transferred.
Agreeing to this policy is your written authorization for us to release your information as this section describes.
Your meter readings are yours
You can end our meter access at any time from your account page, by email to support@kilowhiz.com, or at smartmetertexas.com. Readings we already hold stay in your account.
Retention and deletion
We keep your information while your account is open and as long as we need it or the law requires. When you delete your account we delete your account data, except records we must keep, copies held by service providers and backups until they expire, and information that no longer identifies you.
Security
We use reasonable safeguards. No system is perfectly secure.
Your rights
To ask about, correct or delete your information, email support@kilowhiz.com. You can also complain to the Public Utility Commission of Texas about how we handle your information; its contact details are on our broker disclosures.
Children
Kilowhiz is for adults entering electricity contracts and is not directed to anyone under 18.
Changes to this policy
We may change this policy; the date at the top shows when it last changed. Using Kilowhiz after a change means you accept it.
